Mark would come home raving about this chocolate cobbler he'd had at this little diner where he often had lunch. Well, one day, I wanted to do something extra special for him, so I made a huge dinner, and I wanted to top it off with this dessert that I'd never heard of, much less knew how to make! So, I called the diner, explained that I needed this recipe, and was put on the phone with a sweet little lady who had to be at least 90 years old! She gave me her version of the recipe, which included lots of pinches, dashes, and dollops. I wrote down her every word, then scoured the internet to find the missing pieces in my understanding. The recipe below is the result.
Now I could stop there and it would be a sweet story. But, I was a wretch of a wife in those early days, and when he didn't come home early enough to enjoy all my hard work, I threw the entire dinner, cobbler and all in the trash. Even as I write that, I can't believe that was me! Though far from perfect, I am a walking testament to the changing work of the Lord! We laugh about it now, as it seems like another life, and thankfully, another WIFE! This dessert is my humble reminder of who I am without Jesus!
I hope y'all like it as much as we do!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- 1 1/2 sticks butter
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3 TBS unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 + cup milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups boiling water
Bake until set, 30-40 minutes. Be prepared to eat this while it's still warm, and get yourself some good quality Vanilla ice cream to eat with it.
Enjoy!

Oh, my...I want some...NOW!! That would be great for tonight, however, Devin is making her annual fall sugar cookies for the children to decorate this afternoon and informed me we have NO MORE BUTTER!! We cannot cook without butter, so dad may have to stop at Wally world and get some. Wonder what a chocolate overdose would do to the baby?

OH.............MY!!! That looks SOOOOOO YUMMY. My husband would just wig smooth out if I made that for him.
And your 'wife' story reminds me SO much of ME once upon a time.... like you said, thank goodness the Lord doesn't leave us where He finds us. :)
OK, me again. :) I just had to let you know I just made this! Just so happened to have all the ingredients, and hubby worked hard all day and needed a treat (yeah, it was ALL for hubby, you know? totally self-less of me to make this...no ulterior motive here). Anyhoo...just had to let you know this was TO DIE FOR good with a scoop of Braums homestyle vanilla on top!! YUMMY!! Adding this to my go-to recipe book!
Melissa,
So glad you like it! It's pretty sinful, huh? I can't believe I gave out this recipe today and didn't make one for myself! It's so on my menu this weekend, though. Hubby is due one. And yes, it's all for them!
Don't faint dead away, but I do believe I have a Weight Watchers version of this. Is it like Volcano Cake, kinda gooey in the middle?
You are such a cobbler maker! Chicken Cobbler, Chocolate Cobbler... soon you will start making shoes and you will BE a Cobbler.
Um, excuse me, but WHERE'S THE PICTURE... for those of us who are visually oriented in their learning style. I mean, how will I know that this is really as yummy as y'all say if there is no picture? Hmm?

I don't know how I ran across your blog, but the Chocolate Cobbler sounds very intriguing- so I must make it soon. Perhaps for the Alpha Course that we run through our church. I am in charge of all the meals and have been searching for something divine. Chocolate almost never fails! I absolutely love that you added your story. I think dishes are always better with a story behind them. :) Thanks for sharing! -Rachel M. Eugene, OR.
So my we just pulled off another Alpha Course dinner for 65 people tonight. We finished off our London Broil meal with this Chocolate Cobbler. It was pretty funny looking going into the oven- all watery looking- but it was FABULOUSLY chocolatey coming out- and was perfect with vanilla ice cream. Everyone raved about it! Thanks so much for sharing it with us- It's a keeper!!! -Rachel M.
Rachel,
It does look a bit questionable going in. Thanks for trusting the process, though, and I'm so glad your group enjoyed it!
Thanks for visiting my blog!
